Debra Jane Elwood, 68, entered into God’s Kingdom on March 21, 2023. She was born on
November 25, 1954, in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Lester and Mary Rose White.
Debra was a light that shined through life’s darkness. She was a kind and gentle soul that will
be remembered and missed by the many lives she touched. Showing her love to everyone
around her, she was a living example that patience and love conquer all. Debra’s love for her
family and friends was immeasurable. She met her beloved husband James in the 8'th grade.
From that moment on, they were inseparable. They were blessed to share 52 beautiful wedding
anniversaries together. She always strove to bring love, balance and strength to her family.
While raising three children, she also worked hard to pursue her dream career of being an
elementary school teacher. She worked in the education field for 38 years in the Fort Wayne
Community, Southwest Allen, and Whitley County school districts. She was able to earn not
only a Bachelor’s but also a Master’s degree in Education. As a teacher, she was able to use her
passion of helping others by shining her light on “her kids.” She was loved by her students,
their families, and her colleagues. Helping her students to learn, grow, and guide them on the
right path in life was one of her most beautiful life’s work.
One of Debra’s lifelong pastime enjoyments was expressing her creative side. She spent many
hours sewing, cross stitching, decorating cakes, creating and painting ceramic arts, and
diamond art. After her retirement, Debra enjoyed sewing doll clothes that were sought after
and adored by many. Leaning on her faith in God through the trials and tribulations of life, she
set the example for everyone around her that God’s love will guide you through.
Debra, the most loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister is survived by her
husband, James Elwood Jr.; son, Jonathon (Angela) Elwood; daughter, Holly (Sherry) Elwood;
son, Joshua (Emina) Elwood; granddaughter, Heather Elwood; grandson, Jeremy Elwood; sister
Laura White; brother, David (Michelle) White; sister, Sherilyn (Dwayne) Nichols; several nieces
and nephews; and her loyal Puggle, Missy.
